Tryout FAQ's

Q: Who can try out?
A: Athletes from ages 7+ and experience levels are welcome. Teams are structured to suit beginners through to advanced dancers and cheerleaders. Pom doubles has a minimum age of 16, you may tryout if turning 16 in 2026.

Q: What to prepare:
A: Athletes trying out for Pom Doubles must prepare a 45 second solo which will be performed to the aidition pannel during tryouts. For athletes trying out for Pom, Jazz or Cheerleading Development teams you do not need to prepare anything ahead of the day.

Q: Do I need previous cheerleading, gymnastics, or dance experience?
A: No experience is required. Coaches assess your current skills and place you on a team where you’ll thrive.

 

Q: What should I wear?
A: Fitted athletic clothing (e.g., shorts/leggings and a sports top), trainers/cheer shoes, and hair tied back. No jewelry for safety reasons.

 

Q: What do I need to bring?
A: Water bottle, a positive attitude, and lots of energy.

Q: Can I tryout for multiple teams?
A: Yes you can however if selected for multiple teams, be aware of the time comitments for this.

 

Q: How are teams selected?
A: Athletes are evaluated on areas such as: dance technique, jumps, tumbling, stunts, dance, and performance. Coaches also look at attitude, teamwork, and potential.

Q: What skills will be assessed?
A: Coaches may look at dance technique, flexibility, strength, jumps, basic tumbling (cartwheels, round-offs), motions, timing, and confidence. If trying out for either Pom or Jazz, you will be required to show set choreography learnt during the tryout in small groups.

Q: When does the season run?
A: Typically from November through July, with training sessions once per month for 3 hours.

Q: What are the costs involved?
A: Fees cover training, competition entries, uniforms, and travel. Full breakdowns are given at/after tryouts.


Q: Do I need to buy my own uniform?
A: Yes, uniforms and training gear are required, but they’re ordered through the program.

 

Q: Do athletes need to train outside of SC IOM?
A: Yes. We expect all athletes to continue relevant training outside of official sessions. This ensures they are building strength, technique, and performance quality to meet the demands of the sport.
